GOOD ONE TIME Tom and Richard had a lot of these lyrics already done before I got into the room. I really liked the play on words from the very first lines, i”f you need a driver, I’m the driving kind, if your heart needs stealing, I can rob you blind”. I already had a groove in mind for a song and it worked perfectly with this one. Once we got into the studio and started recording, Kenny Greenberg added the guitar intro. It reminds me just a little bit of Funk 49 by the James Gang. To me, it really set the tone of the record from the very first note.

BAD AS YOU this song is all about two people who complained about the other person‘s messes, only to realize that they really aren’t any different, they’re just as bad as each other. As with a lot of the songs on this record, Tom and Richard and I sat in Tom‘s office in his basement and created the songs from scratch.

SURE LOOKS GOOD TO ME Gretchen Wilson and I have known each other for almost 30 years. When I first moved to Nashville, she was a waitress at the club. She would get up and sing with us and it was obvious then what a great voice she had. We’ve talked about recording a duet together For decades, and I wanted to make sure to make that happen on this record. The concept of the song and the vibe was an idea that I had been working on. I brought it into one of our writing sessions with Tom and Richard and with their help. I think we crafted a really really good song that was a perfect vehicle for her and me. When I sent her the rough mix for her to check out and to learn her part, she jumped right on it and said she loved it. I’m so happy we finally got to do this together.

ONCE YOU LEAVE My background is definitely an old school, R&B, southern soul and blues. I had an idea for this silky soul ballad, and I started writing it at home. I had become friends with Kenneth Wright from doing shows together at the club. He has written songs that have been recorded by a number of major country artists over the years. We had never written together, but had talked about it many times. I called him up and we got together and wrote this song. I think we’ve all been in a relationship where we walked out of the door and then came back and tried to make it work only to realize that too much negativity had gone by and it was impossible to recapture that initial feeling. This song is definitely personal for me. The background vocals that my friend Kyla Jade put on raised the song to a whole other level!

FLIP IT TO THE OTHER SIDE When Tom showed me the lyrics and it started out with “if her pancakes burning, from being over fried”  all I could think about was—what the hell are we gonna do with this? I needed to do a song where I could jam a little bit on slide and had that kind of Mississippi groove to it. We had so much fun just being silly and writing this song. Once it was done and I played it for my friends, they just loved it. I knew I needed to get some harmonica on it, and who better to call than my new friend Charlie Musslewhite. We had just started getting to know each other a little bit and had eaten a few meals together, In Clarksdale MS at a mutual friend Gary Vincent’s house. I was so excited when Charlie agreed to play on the song. To me, he definitely put the icing on the cake!

WE BLEW IT Here’s another song where two people just couldn’t seem to figure it out and continued to make mistakes. SMH. It seems to be a comment rate of my personal life! LOL. I wanted to throw a few different chord changes into this song so that it wasn’t just your straight 145 Blues. It’s got a great feel to it!

LONG WAY DOWN This song was pitched to me by one of the writers. They originally wrote it with Chris Stapleton in mind but he passed on it— and I’m glad he did!!! From the very first time I heard this song, I fell in love with it and couldn’t wait to record it. I called on my friend Kyla Jade to put the background vocals on it to help give it a gospel feel. Like so many musicians, I came up playing in church. This song just connected with me down in my soul.

NO RHYME OUT REASON Tom and Richard and I had a lot of fun writing this song. Originally the music I had written for it was at a lot faster tempo, but when we got in the studio, we just slowed it down and gave it this perfect groove. Tom decided to have a little fun with different sounds and mixes. It turned out to be a really cool and different track than anything else on the record. When I play this live, I got the whole crowd singing “ain’t no rhyme or reason”!

MEAN BAD WRONG When Richard and Tom brought me the lyrics to this song, I have to admit I was not convinced. Even up until the time we went in the studio, I just wasn’t completely sold on the song. But once we recorded it, with that old timey sound and feel, I loved it. I had been looking for the perfect song to have my friend Kenny Neal play on, and this was it. He added vocals, harmonica and guitar, and I added the slide guitar. This is another one of those songs that just FEELS GOOD

NEVER GONNA GET ME BACK I had actually written this song a couple of years ago, but I never really felt like it was finished. One afternoon when Richard and I were sitting at his house for a writing session, I played this song for him. We went back-and-forth on how to fix it, and I recorded a rough demo on the acoustic guitar with me singing. When we got together a week later, he had reworked the song, and after two or three times through it, we had a finished song. This recording is a little more Pop or Americana than the rest of the album which helps to show my versatility.  Again, this is another song that stems from personal experience.

SHE’S JUST RIGHT FOR ME We needed a straight ahead traditional, fun, blues, shuffle, and here it is! Written and recorded in the styles of BB King, Bobby Blue Bland and Louis Jordan, this song reflects what made me love the blues to begin with! The horn parts that the Mavericks horn section recorded, and the call and response background vocals, reminded me of the big band records that my Mom and Dad used to play at home. I dare you not to sing along and dance to this Song!

ON MY DYING DAY Well, let’s finish this album with a slow blues burner that really features my guitar playing! Tom and Richard had the lyrics already finished so I came up with the music and the melody. I recorded the vocals and guitar solo in just 2 takes! I closed my eyes and just let the song take me away!!

THE RECORD AS A WHOLE! I’m super proud of this album! I think it flows great from start to finish, and lets me really showcase my songwriting, vocals and guitar playing. I’m so excited to be working with Eric and 40 Below Records to see where this takes me! The adventure is on!!!
